What is 2010
Year of Recovery?

As part of the recovery community we want to use this opportunity to reach out and connect with likeminded people looking to make positive changes in their lives. Our campaign is based around our website and television output, as well as a series of recovery events around the country during 2010.

Our first act is to invite you to sign up to 2010 Year of Recovery, and to take a moment to reflect and think about what you personally, would like to change or improve over the next year that would make a difference to your life, or others. Write no more than a paragraph and post it here onto our website, share your thoughts and ambitions, and inspire others.

Your inspiration can help to address some of the issues that fuel the addictive behaviours that many people turn to, to fill that empty space in their lives; the greed, selfishness, lack of purpose and meaning that have such negative
impacts within our families,
workplaces and
communities.

"During 2010, The Year of Recovery, my ambition for Inexcess Television is to develop our content and relationships with the mutual aid organisations, and to help promote a wider understanding of the 12-step program as a tool for recovery.

On a personal level I intend to read and write more. The books are piling up (a diverse collection from The Origin of Species to Iggy Pop) and I need to dedicate time to finishing the writing I have started. As ever, I'll be sharing what I'm learning."

In order to help make the year of recovery a success, we are seeking your thoughts on what you would change in 2010.

We are looking for your ideas, comments and opinions on all things recovery. These can relate to anything you think could make a positive change to your life, or the lives of others.

Together, we hope to bring together ideas and opinions from across the recovery community, and this is your opportunity to get in on the act!

So, if you would like to join the debate, please submit your comments using the form at the bottom of the page.

Addiction – a subject close to my life; been to 12 step programmes and feel at home with the honesty. But is there such a thing as an ‘almost addict’ a ‘partial addict’? Maybe a psychlogical but not chemically addicted addict – me? If so, where do we belong – can’t relate to the extreme 12 stepper stories but messing around on the fringe. Wonder if anyone has researched into genes where you can be an addict with strong self-discipline? And no, this isn’t denial – if I get a craving – I stop. So… what’s my pledge then? To find out the answer for myself. I do believe this is a very complex subject and not just a ‘one size fits all’. Hey – thanks to all involved in helping addicts.

It will be my principal goal, during 2010 to enhance public understanding of addictive/compulsive disorders.

There is increasingly compelling evidence that such behavioural disorders arise from identifiable anomolies in the production, metabolising and reuptake of the neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine etc.). Current investigations suggest very strongly that these neurological deficiencies are genetically mediated. Thus, the underlying addictive disease, which gives rise to the various addictive/compulsive disorders (drug and alcohol dependency, eating disorders, compulsive gambling, sex-addiction, compulsive risk-taking etc) exhibits all of the marks that characterise any other inherited, incurable and progressive illness.

In 2010 I feel that it’s more important than ever for Clearhead to promote understanding about cannabis and the potential risks from early use and long term abuse. For many people cannabis is an increasingly early and highly significant mind altering experience and therefore the emotional attachment can be extremely hard to break.

In 2010 we are committed to making our website and materials much more user friendly for young cannabis smokers using illustration and audio technology to help those for whom literacy is very often a struggle.

Tell myself for 2010

“I sought my soul but could not seek. I sought myself but he eluded me. then I sought my recovery and found all three.”
“Whenever you are in conflict with someone there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship or deepening that relationship..that factor is ATTITUDE”"
“The sleeper gets nothing but the dream.
Attitude is 80% what happens to me and 20% how I deal with it.
90% of my problems are caused by my own thoughts/
I can no longer be content with just getting by.
I will fabricate pain to set me up for future pain.
If i am not working on the solution I am working on the problem.
Stepping out on nothing willing to fall on something!”
